At the Beta Club’s annual induction ceremony Wednesday, three sophomores and 25 freshmen joined the Galileo High School chapter of the National Beta Club.

New students are invited to join Beta upon earning a 3.2 G.P.A. for the year while also showing a trend of strong attendance and a commitment to serving others.

“I think that freshmen joining Beta is a good way to get new members, and I think it can potentially be exciting to join new things right after coming to school and be able to feel like you are a part of something,” Senior Beta Club Member Sarah Hawkins said.

Several of the new members joined the club in fall and attended the State Beta Convention with the club, earning recognition after only a short time taking part.

“Many have already shown their dedication to the club and hard work as they attended convention with us in February and earned awards in competitions specifically for new Betas,” Beta Club Sponsor Leigh Walker said.

New members Jada Pridgen, Anijah Ferrell and Christal Wilson placed third in the Fresh Look at Beta competition where first-year Betas showcase their club knowledge.

“Beta Convention was actually really fun,” Freshman and New Beta Inductee Lucy Cross said. “I made a lot of memories there.  It’s nice to be around other people who are in Beta and who care about being in Beta.”
Cross attended Beta Club meetings regularly throughout the 2017-2018 school year and, as such, participated in many service projects for the club.

“It’s nice that we get to do service projects for people around the community,” Cross said.  “I feel the service projects that we have done have definitely made an impact, like when we filled the school with sticky notes that had positive messages on them. It was also nice when we were writing cards for a sick kid around Christmas because it felt like we were making a difference.”

In addition to the induction of new members, a cording ceremony was also held Wednesday where seniors active in Beta for all four years of high school received their gold cords to wear with their regalia at graduation.

“Seniors wear Beta cords to signify their involvement in the club and their dedication to community service,” Walker said. “I am so proud of our 16 seniors and all that they have accomplished during their time at Galileo.”

Planning and carrying out the annual ceremony were club officers, President Hammad Nasir, Vice-President Catherine Carter, Secretary Leah Warner and Treasure Isaac Vanderveer. Following induction and cording was the instating of new officers for the 2018-2019 school year where outgoing officers swore in their successors with a candle-lighting ceremony where each was read and accepted their duties.

Incoming President for the 2018-2019 school year Catherine Carter swore in her incoming vice-president, Oscar Kemp. Also being charged with a new office were rising seniors Madison Webb, who will serve as secretary, Isaac Vanderveer, who will continue to serve as treasurer, and Leah Warner and Kamryn Smith who will serve as club historians.
