Movie Review: Suicide Squad

Joshua Gaites, Staff Writer

Suicide Squad is a movie that I was really excited for but it got a lot of hate. It came out on Aug. 1 and made more than $745 million in box office. The movie was about a group of villains that a U.S. intelligence officer thinks are expendable. The villains included Deadshot, played by Will Smith; Harley Quinn, played by Margot Robbie; Captain Boomerang, played by Jai Courtney; Killer Croc, played by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje; and other inmates who have to work together to save the world. While they are battling this mysterious enemy, another inmate, Joker has his own diabolical plans.

I thought it was an amazing movie and with only a budget of  $175 million they did a great job. According to Rotten Tomatoes the movie did not do that well with only a 26 percent rating. The movie received a lot of negative press when it came out and I don’t really know why. It was an amazing movie and the actors were great. I will give it to some people that the plot was a little vague and did not really go into explicit detail of how everything came to be, although it got right into the action, there really was not much of a story behind anything. I think if they went a different route with the movie, like having one of the members die, which would add more drama to the movie or giving more back story, the movie would have been much better.

I would have to say that DC Comics did a great job in selecting the actors they did. One of them is Will Smith who did a great job with his character and was able to show the love he had for his daughter. Smith has had a lot of experience with acting and showing emotion and I can’t think of a better person to play that character than him. Margot Robbie did a good job as well as all of the other actors but, let’s be honest, all people cared about were the main and well-known characters, especially fans of the original comic. Harley Quinn, Joker’s girlfriend and had a very important role to fulfill and played the the psycho act so well that I would have thought she was really crazy.

During the shooting of this movie the actors had to endure a lot. According to Billboard Jared Leto, who played the Joker, put a lot of the actors under a lot of stress as he had to play a deranged psycho path and to prepare for that role he was in character on and off set. He walked around in public looking like the Joker and even acted like him at some points. Leto wanted everyone to feel a sense of surprise when he is around and he was very dedicated to his role, so dedicated he sent strange items to his costars as gifts.

Suicide Squad is a phenomenal movie and I really loved it. Although it may have received some hate here and there it is a movie everyone should definitely see. It had great actors and an ok story line, but if you are into action-packed movies that just get right into it, this is your type of movie. Plus if you are new to these kind of movies they have a scene at the end of the credits that hints at there being another movie in the works. If you want to know what it is you will just have to see the movie for yourself.
