Seniors at Galileo Magnet High School will be celebrating National Signing Day on April 26, excited to share with the world the schools they have chosen to make their home for the next four years.

Part of Michelle Obama’s Reach Higher Initiative, College Signing Day is a worldwide event celebrating its third year. The first lady started the slogan “#ReachHigher” to encourage high school seniors to apply for a college.

For Galileo’s event students are encouraged to wear attire from the college they have been accepted to.

Guidance Counselor at Galileo Dr. Ariel Winston believes this movement will encourage our students to apply for college.

“’#ReachHigher’ means constantly finding a way to yourself or a situation better,” Winston. “I really think this day will empower the lower classmen because they always look up to the seniors. They will soon have to do the same techniques they did to become where they are now.”

Winston said the event, for the underclassmen, will help them focus on their grades and future. “Seeing the seniors have grown up and decided which college they want to attend, they will soon start to do the same thing,” Winston said. “This also helps them know their variety of schools to choose from.”

Many seniors are excited to show each other which colleges they have been accepted for with all of our seniors being accepted to at least one college.

Winston encouraged all seniors to apply for one college in the fall with the Falcons being accepted to 46 different colleges.

“I am attending Radford University in the fall majoring in business,” Senior Reggie Jeffries said. “I was accepted at 13 colleges and universities and chose Radford because they practically gave me a full ride. Their business program is ranked top 50 in the nation and I am excited to continue my education there.”
