It was a mad dash to the finish line Nov. 2 as the Danville Parks and Recreation Department held the Dirty Dan Dash in downtown Danville, presented by Danville Regional Medical Center.

The 3.7-mile dash ran through Danville’s River District, Dan Daniel Memorial Park and along the Riverwalk trail.

The race consisted of 20 obstacles and a mud pit with runners paying $55-65 to participate in the race and enjoy a meal at the after party.

“The Dirty Dan Dash and other zombie events create community fellowship and heighten awareness of social issues like hunger and diseases,” Jenifer Hartley, a volunteer zombie from the Danville Public Library said. “Thank you to all zombies that came out to help.”

Galileo Sophomore Bruce Kendrick, Junior Jamiah Pridgen, Sophomore Trysten Wiggins, Freshman Autumn Wiggins, and Senior Princess Elliott served as volunteer zombies at the race, each excited to take part in this first-year event.

“It was fun I felt like the living dead,” Pridgen said.

Volunteer zombies had to walk to the community market to pick up their meal and then walk back to the course to cheer on the racers who were crossing the finish line.

Towards the end of the race these members of the undead joined the crowd in dancing to the 80’s hit “Thriller” by Michael Jackson.

“The race was great I didn’t expect to be as tough as it was,” Galileo Junior and Dirty Dan Racer Savanna Young said. “I was still finding mud in my ears days after the race.”
