The Galileo Cross Country Team had their second meet of the season Sept. 9 at Anglers Park where both the boys and girls teams finished in second place.

Freshman Madison Webb finished third overall with a time of 26 minutes and 18 seconds, while Sophomore Elizabeth McGurty and Senior Brittany Young’s performances led the girls to the second place team finish.

“I have always loved to run and thought it would be fun to do what I love on a team,” Webb said.

Webb said she did not expect such a strong finish and that she plans on improving even more during the course of the season.

“I was surprised that I came in third and I am trying to improve my time throughout the season, but I do not have a set time yet,” she said.

Sophomore Henry Stevens won first place in the boy’s race and was subsequently followed by Junior Angelo Lamothe in ninth place, Senior Robert Young in 14th place, Senior Josh Francisco in 16th place, and Freshman William Jones in 19th place, each out of 83 runners.

“It felt good when I won the race. I was proud of the rest of my team because they did really well,” Stevens said.

Even with a time of 18 minutes and 11 seconds, Stevens plans on improving his personal best.

“I want to run faster and my goal is to finish with a time that is under 17 minutes,” Stevens said.

Coach Mark Bryant and the boys are anticipating such progress with a goal set of being one of the top teams in the state.

Bryant said he is thankful for the support the team has received so far this year, explaining that it is the hard work of the students as well as the parents that pushes the team forward.

“On the boy’s side, we are expecting to finish in the top 3 at the conference to move on to regionals and then advance to state, and hopefully finish in the top 5 states,” Bryant said. “On the girls’ side, we are focusing on growth…anything they do beyond conference would be very exciting.”
